ACTIONS FOR THE DISTRIBUTION SCIENCE OUTREACH MATERIALS

Between February and July 2026, the PELD Oeste do Pará continued its efforts to distribute scientific outreach materials, distributing 11 copies of the book “Biodiversity in the Tapajós National Forest and the Tapajós Arapiuns Extractive Reserve” and 44 copies of the “Guide to Mammals of the Tapajós National Forest (FNT) and the Alter do Chão Environmental Protection Area (APA).”

The materials are available for free on our website. The book was edited by Carlos Rodrigo Brocardo and Leandro Lacerda Giacomin and published in 2022. It contains information on various biodiversity groups in the Tapajós region. The guide, meanwhile, provides information on medium and large-sized mammals, including their conservation status and tracks, that inhabit the areas where PELD POPA plots are located and their surroundings.

Copies were delivered to the Santarém Department of the Environment (SEMMA), the Paulo Rodrigues Municipal Library of Santarém, the LBA Program, the Pará Research Support Center (NUPPA), and the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF) in the municipality of Santarém; the Federation of Traditional Organizations and Communities of the Tapajós National Forest and São Pedro School (Jaguarari Community), located in the Tapajós National Forest.

This semester, an initiative was launched to identify schools and partner institutions for the program, which received a “Partner Institution/School” plaque.

The partner schools received the book on biodiversity, the guide, the informational brochure, the plaque, and cards about the Amazonian savannas. The schools that received these materials were Escola da Floresta, Escola Dom Macedo Costa, Escola Helena Mafra, Escola Indígena Borari, and Escola Sagrado Coração de Jesus, located in the Alter do Chão Environmental Protection Area (APA); and Escola Boaventura Queiroz, located in Eixo Forte. The partner establishments received the guide, the brochure, and the partner plaque. These included Ayô Gastronomia, Centro Cultural Banzeiro, Espaço e Restaurante Caranazal, Lalah Amazônia, Pousada Amazônia, Pousada do Mingote, and Suraras do Tapajós, all located in the Alter do Chão Environmental Protection Area (APA).

A total of 27 guidebooks were also distributed: 15 to participants in the practical English course organized by the Wakará Project in the Tapajós National Forest; 10 to participants in the “Best Practices for Guiding Visitors on Interpretive Trails” course, two to the Alter do Chão River and Land Tourism Cooperative Association (COOFTA), and one to Rekantu do Poeta in the Alter do Chão Environmental Protection Area (APA).

The distribution of these materials will continue throughout the remainder of 2026, reaching new institutions, schools, communities, and establishments in the regions near the research sites. In addition, new outreach materials will be produced. These materials serve as a foundation for bringing scientific knowledge closer to the community and raising public awareness about our biodiversity.
