Long-Term Ecological Research Program - PELD Oeste do Pará site

PELD, linked to CNPq, is a national program with research sites in various regions of Brazil. Its main objective is the long-term monitoring of biodiversity, assessing natural and human impacts on ecosystems and the effectiveness of management actions. POPA is part of PELD, with study areas located in the Alter do Chão Environmental Protection Area and in the Tapajós National Forest, bringing together interdisciplinary teams in an integrated approach.

Professor at Ufopa
"POPA is one of the permanent research sites of PELD, maintained by CNPq, part of the Federal Government. The POPA research team has been conducting biodiversity monitoring in the study areas, in the Alter do Chão Environmental Protection Area and the Tapajós National Forest, collecting data on local fauna, flora, and fungi. Several activities are aimed at strengthening ecotourism in the study region. POPA researchers are affiliated with the Graduate Program in Biodiversity at the Federal University of Western Pará and the Graduate Program in Ecology at the National Institute of Amazonian Research. Researcher at INPA
"PELD Oeste do Pará plays an essential role in ecological monitoring of the region, continuing an important long-term series of wild rodent collection that began in 1999. This extensive database is crucial for understanding species population dynamics and their responses to climate change and land-use changes. Currently, the PELD Oeste do Pará core, through collaboration between Ufopa and INPA, focuses on and strengthens these studies, promoting long-term scientific knowledge and the training of researchers in the Amazon."

"PELD – Long-Term Ecological Research Program – is a long-term monitoring program promoted by the Brazilian government and supported by various institutions to address one of today’s greatest challenges: the lack of knowledge about biodiversity. In the western Pará region, numerous undergraduate and graduate studies are being conducted with the support of PELD – POPA (PELD of Western Pará), enhancing scientific research, human resources training, and enabling the sharing of highly relevant data to fill knowledge gaps about the fauna, flora, and fungi of the Amazon."
