The PELD (Long-Term Ecological Research Program) is a nationwide program with research sites spread across Brazil. It is part of an International Network of Long-Term Ecological Research Sites. In the Alter do Chão Environmental Protection Area (APA) and in the Tapajós National Forest (FLONA do Tapajós), the PELD West Pará site (POPA) is in operation, assessing the impacts of natural and human factors on Amazonian forest and savanna ecosystems. In addition to its scientific objectives, POPA is also interested in supporting ecotourism activities in partnership with traditional communities. For this reason, our team of researchers has been producing identification guides for local fauna and flora and assisting in the training of residents through a respectful exchange of knowledge.
For the identification guides and other materials to be produced, and for interested residents to work as tourist guides, we need to purchase equipment such as camera traps, binoculars, camcorders, photo cameras, portable GPS devices, among others. These items cannot be purchased with the operating funds received from our only source of public funding, the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Therefore, we are launching a fundraising campaign on the website vakinha.com.br. Check out the ways to donate below and support the actions of PELD West Pará!
Thank you very much.
Prof. Rodrigo Fadini
Coordinator of POPA.
